The city, founded in 1794 by Catherine II, originally built by the European standard prominent statesmen - Admiral Joseph Deribas, outstanding military engineer Franz Devolanom, mayor Duke de Richelieu and others. The city was built not only as a major center of international trade and the largest port on the Black Sea, but also as a center of education, science and culture in the south of the vast Russian Empire. Odessa has a unique architectural appearance, many architectural monuments recognized as masterpieces of world architecture - Opera House, the building of the City Council, the Potemkin stairs, the building of commodity exchange and others. Today, Odessa is still the largest scientific and cultural center, pearl of the south of Ukraine.
